If you're like most people, you probably use your deck often during the warmer months. It's a great way to relax and get some fresh air, but if it isn't properly maintained, your deck can become damaged before long. Here are some tips for making sure your deck stays looking new all summer long:

Wash Your Deck
Washing your deck is a crucial part of maintenance. Using a pressure washer may be beneficial; ensure you know how to safely operate a pressure washer if you choose to use one. However, consider that high pressure can damage the paint and wood. Otherwise, you can also sweep, pre-rinse, use a solution to clean, and then rinse the deck off with a hose. Clean the deck with a deck cleaner if necessary. Use a deck brush or scrubber to remove dirt and grime from hard-to-reach areas like between boards on your patio or in between bricks of your walkway where dirt has accumulated.

Remove Bad Nails
After washing your deck, you may notice that additional maintenance is required. Loose and defective nails can pose a major hazard, especially if you have children and/or pets, and should be removed as soon as possible. If you notice loose nails, you will need a hammer and nail set. Nails popping out should be replaced with deck screws. It’s never a bad idea to contact a decking company to safely remove any hazards like bad nails and prevent any further damages from occurring, and also to ensure your deck is safe.

Maintain Your Deck Furniture
Furniture maintenance is another important aspect of maintaining your deck. It’s a good idea to make sure furniture is clean and dry, especially after it rains. Do what you can to preserve your furniture from harsh weather elements; take cushions off and store them in a dry area, and frequently assess your furniture for damage. Also make sure furniture is well-ventilated to minimize the risk of mold growth. You should also make sure furniture is placed away from the house, where it’s not exposed to the sun or rain. Severe weather can cause your outdoor furniture to crash and impact your home’s exterior, so safely storing your furniture is important.
